The Leo Solar Eclipse and the Truth About Releasing Your Ego

There's a lot of talk right now about this eclipse asking you to release your ego. Specifically, ego as this idea of being full of yourself or attention seeking. This is where pop astrology really did us dirty in its interpretation of Leo energy.
So let's talk about what ego actually is through two different lenses.
Psychologically, the ego is a vital, healthy structure. It's the mediator between your instincts and the world around you, the part of you that organizes memory, regulates emotion, and gives you a stable foundation to work from. In psychology, the goal isn't to get rid of ego. It's to build one strong and healthy enough to hold you steady.
Spiritually, most traditions define ego as the story of separateness, the "me" built out of labels, attachments, and old conditioning, that convinces you you're cut off from everything else. It's more or less a vessel, a container for the material manifestation and expression of who we are. Spiritual work asks you to stop mistaking that container for the whole truth of who you are, not to destroy it.
Ego is not good or bad. It just is.
The same is true on a bigger scale. I know there are plenty of conversations that pit the self and the collective against each other as if they're two different things. But the truth is that they are parts of the same whole, and neither can exist without the other. That's ultimately what I hope this upcoming series of eclipses in Aquarius and Leo teaches us along the way.
So when we talk about releasing ego, it's an invitation to remove some of the clutter and layers we've gathered along the way. What does it look like to strip away the conditioning, the expectations, the long-held stories, the pressure of who we should be or who we became to survive in different environments and situations along the way?
Maybe we've outgrown some of those layers. Maybe we've decided some of them were never an accurate expression of who we are. Maybe some of them were protective, layers we needed to feel safe once, and we've since found safety in healthier, steadier ways, which means we don't have to wear them anymore.
Eclipses almost always ask us to sacrifice something. What if we're only being asked to sacrifice what we're ready to let go of? What if the sacrifice isn't something we're afraid to lose, but something that, once gone, lets us live fuller and healthier lives? What if shedding it would actually feel good?
Leo is the home of the Sun, the soul, the heart, the backbone
It has to do with our sense of self and our spirit, and just as importantly, how each of us contributes to and serves the greater good through our unique expression. The Sun offers us clarity, truth, and visibility. I wonder if this eclipse isn't inviting us to make the truth of our heart, of who we are, visible to the outside world.
I've come to think of eclipse seasons as transitional phases. They're often accepted as periods of change, of unexpected shifts, even chaotic energy. The more I pay attention, the more it feels like the chaos comes from trying to impose our control or force the shift into a specific direction. This is where the Strength card comes in, the one associated with Leo. What does it look like to be gentle with the shift? To have compassion and softness in the face of the unknown?
Maybe that gentleness is exactly what this eclipse is asking for. Not a push, not a decision to force. Clarity that comes from stillness instead of striving. From receiving instead of reaching. From sitting with the unknown until clarity arrives. From holding compassion and grace for ourselves as we find our way back to our inner sunlight.
You know what cats do better than almost anyone? Nothing. They nap. They stretch out in a patch of sun and take up exactly the space they take up, regal simply for existing, no effort required. Be more like a cat with this eclipse.
Even our ancestors didn't agree on what eclipses meant. Times of upheaval, portals, omens, weather predictions, deaths of kings, none of it settled into one tidy story, and maybe that disagreement is the point. Maybe some things were never meant to resolve into a single truth. What can you let yourself not know right now?
