Your Guide to the Aries Full Moon

Mars is Shamed Before the Muses
Often when the combatants are ranged face to face, and swords are drawn and spears are bristling, these men come between the armies and stay the battle, just as wild beasts are sometimes held spellbound. Thus even among the most savage barbarians anger yields to wisdom, and Mars is shamed before the Muses.
—Diodorus Siculus
With the full moon in Aries, this lunar moment is ruled by Mars. Diodorus Siculus was a Greek historian writing in the first century BCE, and the quote above comes from his account of the Celts. He is describing the Druids who would step between two armies about to fight and stop the battle. The wise ones. The philosophers. The mediators. The peacekeepers. The Druids are the Muses that put Mars to shame. Mars is brought to a standstill by something steadier than fury. It reminds us that spirit, creativity, art, divination, and wisdom actually hold more power than war, rage, and violence.
This full moon (as all full moons do) brings a lot of powerful emotions to the surface. It isn’t just ruled by Mars, it’s ruled by Mars in Cancer. So many big feelings. A lot of exploration around where we feel safe in our feelings. Heck, where we feel safe at all. You may be noticing some tender bits stirring. Maybe some fulfillment and clarity around past emotional triggers.
Creativity and divination can be some of the ways we give our big emotions somewhere to go. Aries and Mars bring a lot of energy that wants to be expressed, so that energy needs to find a productive outlet. It wants to move. It wants to be embodied through action, whether that’s physical activity or making something, and it needs a release valve. Painting, writing, dancing, pulling cards, and ritual can all be that valve, and they often work best together. Expression gives the energy a path while spirit and divination help us better understand the energy. Peace and wisdom can come through the act of releasing that energy, before we ever get to war, whether that’s with ourselves or with someone else.
If we walk down this path a bit further, it reminds us that our rage and anger and big emotions hold power only when we find peace with them. What happens when we let ourselves feel those powerful emotions but don’t let them consume us? When we feel them without reacting to them? Perhaps we find wisdom there in our rage and our anger. Maybe it offers us a bit of information about ourselves, what we’re willing to accept, and where we need a stronger boundary.
The Muses don’t scold the fire. They give it somewhere to go. That’s different from fixing our anger or our passion, or smoothing them over with positive thinking. Skipping past them doesn’t make them disappear. But we can’t swim in them forever either. Held in, they build. Sometimes anger shows up because we’ve been people-pleasing for so long that we finally hit a breaking point, and it comes out all at once. An outlet along the way, whether that’s art, movement, cards, or prayer, is what lets it become information instead of an explosion.
Prompts for Journal or Cards
Here are a few questions to take to your journal or your cards. Use them however works for you.
What is my anger showing me right now?
What boundary needs my attention?
What would peace with this feeling look like?
Or try a two card pull.
One card for what Mars is asking of me,
and one for what the Muses are offering in response.
