Your Guide to the New Moon in Libra 2026

Libra has the beautiful ability to not only see both sides, but to hold both. One of my favorite Libras is always quick with a "couldn't it be both?" when faced with a conundrum. Libra also invites us to explore our relationships, both with ourselves and with others.

Libra is ruled by Venus, so this new moon is too, and Venus is currently retrograde in Scorpio. Venus speaks to what we value and how we relate, and her retrograde through Scorpio takes those questions somewhere deeper. There's a lot about this new moon that points to themes of deep ancestral and karmic healing. The minor arcana card associated with it is the Three of Swords (Libra's second decan), a card all about hurt and healing, grief and sorrow.

I would be remiss not to name the big conversations we're having (again) around violence against women and what justice means on that front, as well as justice as a whole, including everything happening with the death penalty in the United States right now. We are wrestling with quite a bit at the moment, both collectively and individually.

A white taper candle burns set on the ground outdoors among decaying leaves with a vintage-looking round mirror with a gold frame with beading and a ribbon reflecting the candle back.

Retrogrades carry more wisdom than they're given credit for, and that gives me hope as we find ourselves confronting these situations again. Maybe, just maybe, we've spiraled upward a bit from every other time we've had these conversations and had to face the harm, the grief, and the sorrow of the way humans tend to treat one another. Perhaps we are beginning the path toward healing and breaking these violent cycles, the ones we've likely equal parts inherited and perpetuated in our own lifetimes.

So what does all this mean for the very Libra themes of balance, justice, relationships, and equality? Libra is an air sign, after all, so how do we think about it? How do we talk about it? How do we process it both intellectually and emotionally? And maybe more importantly, how do we take the rage, the anger, and the hurt and channel, focus, and harness it toward the change we want to see?

We still need to feel these things, but we have to use that volatile fuel carefully. There's a detachment to an air moon that can be really helpful here, allowing the feeling to exist without living in it all the time. There are times when we need to tap into that rage and wield it as the powerful, protective weapon it is. But it needs a purpose, a point, a reason. Otherwise it ends up consuming the person holding it.

The Lineage We Carry

When we turn this back toward the self, I keep coming back to the ancestral healing and cycle-breaking I mentioned earlier. For many of you reading, the personal and the collective are intertwined here. Some of what we're healing in our own lineage is part of the healing that's needed on a much larger scale. So the work starts close to home. How do we make peace and find our way back to a sense of balance? Where is there fairness in our relationships, in how much we give and how much we receive? What do we value, and what do we believe we're worth? How do we hold ourselves and the other at the same time? And what patterns are we ready to release so we can begin this new cycle in a way that helps us move forward?

Scorpio yearns for depth and intensity. It's connected to death, the unseen, and the numinous. With Venus retrograde there, these energies are showing up alongside Libra, which asks us to look at our relationship with them. That's where I think we get a big invitation to reconnect with our ancestors on the other side. It certainly doesn't hurt that Samhain is coming and we're in a time of year when spirits feel a bit more accessible.

So much of ancestral healing asks us to be willing to face the truth of who our ancestors were, and to recognize their humanity in the same way I hope we're starting to recognize the humanity in one another. There will be people in your lineage who caused harm and people who were harmed. This is an inescapable truth no matter who you are or where your people hail from. How do you make peace with that? How do you navigate it in your own lived experience? What does it mean to hold the truth that you are both the oppressed and the oppressor?

Maybe this is where Libra's gift comes back around. Couldn't it be both? Holding both doesn't excuse the harm or erase the hurt. It might be what makes it possible to stop passing it down.

Prompts for Journaling or Tarot Card Pulls

  1. Where am I holding hurt or grief that hasn't had space to be felt?

  2. What is my anger trying to protect, and where does it want to be pointed?

  3. What did I inherit from my lineage that I want to carry forward, and what am I ready to set down?

  4. Where in my life am I being asked to hold two truths at once?

  5. What would healing look like in my most important relationship right now, including the one with myself?
