An Invitation Into the Depths
While new moons typically bring us an opportunity to set intentions and plant seeds for the coming cycle, the Scorpio New Moon on November 9 brings a different energy and invitation. It asks us to go deep into our inner worlds, to peer into the darkness beneath the surface, and release longstanding patterns that block our growth and progress.
There's nothing wrong with our shadows. Often, there's great power waiting to be found in the darker corners of our spirit. That power is often rooted in compassion and grace. Here under the dark skies of the new moon we can find healing for past wounds, traumas, and beliefs we've held. We can sacrifice them at the altar of this new moon, not to kill them off, instead to transform them in a way that offers resolution. What happens when we allow the discomfort, knowing that the discomfort is what can spur us on towards our true desires and passions?
While we're considering what we're sacrificing, Scorpio energy also teaches us that it's okay to want more than what we've been handed. That we're allowed to want more than the status quo. That forgiveness and meaning are often found through seeking to understand others' motivations as well as our own. The discomfort of how things have been is often what spurs us forward toward healing and new beginnings.
The Pull Between Old and New
Most new moons feel like a fresh page. This one feels more like a reckoning with what we keep repeating. If an old reaction shows up fast, or a worry you thought you'd outgrown returns, this may be part of why. The Moon is squaring Mars and Jupiter in Leo, planets that stir up pride, impulse, and the urge to do what we've always done.
Alongside that is a pull toward more. More honesty, more room, more of what we want. Astrologers track that tug with the Nodes, points that mark the difference between the familiar path and the one calling us forward. The Moon squares them too, which gives this one its karmic edge.
Where do you feel that tug in your own life right now?
Healing What Came First
This New Moon falls at 16° Scorpio, in the sign's second decan. In the Golden Dawn tarot tradition, that decan belongs to the 6 of Cups, a card of childhood, memory, and the gifts and wounds we carry from the past. It holds the sweetness of remembering and the pull to stay there.
Mercury and Venus are both retrograde at this New Moon and turn direct on November 13, so the past is already circling back. Some of what we're invited to release goes as far back as childhood, to the beliefs and habits that took root when we were young.
The Scorpio Full Moon on May 1 fell at 11° Scorpio, in this same decan, so these two moons are in conversation six months apart. If you haven't read that guide yet, it makes a good companion to this one. Read or revisit it here.

A Small Ritual at Scorpio’s Altar
Take what calls to you. Karma follows what we do next, so this ritual ends with a choice. It takes about ten minutes and suits the night of the New Moon or a day or two after.
You'll need a candle (black or deep red if you have one), two slips of paper, a pen, a heatproof dish, and a small cup of water for the 6 of Cups.
Light the candle and take three slow breaths.
On the first slip, write the pattern, belief, or story you're ready to transform. If you know where it began, add that too.
On the second slip, write what that pattern has been protecting.
Burn the first slip in the flame and let it fall into the dish. This is your sacrifice, offered for transformation.
Hold the second slip and the cup of water. Name one thing you'll do differently this cycle, then pour the water onto the earth as a gift to the child you were.
Keep the second slip on your altar for the rest of
